TRYOUT & INTERVIEW DATES
  • Saturday, April 25, 2026 at 9:00 a.m.
  • Sunday, May 17, 2026 at 9:00 a.m.
  • Arrive at Fletcher Cove Park/Lifeguard Headquarters (111 S. Sierra Avenue, Solana Beach, 92075)
  • Applicants must successfully pass all components (swim and interview) of the testing process in order to be considered for a Junior Lifeguard Intern position.

This is a highly competitive process and not all applicants will be offered a position.

Selection is based on both the swim test and the interview process.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Requirements
  • Must be at least 16 years of age by date of hire
  • Must complete a 500 meter open water swim test in 10-minutes or less
  • Must have functional color vision and normal hearing
  • Must have the physical strength, endurance and ability required for swimming, running, walking, standing, or sitting for extended periods of time
Desired Qualifications
  • Two (2) years of experience participating in a Junior Lifeguard Program
  • Knowledge of ocean shoreline currents and conditions
  • Prior swimming or surfing experience
  • Have the physical strength, endurance and ability required for swimming, running, walking, standing, or sitting for extended periods of time
  • Prior swimming and surfing experience desirable

Physical Examination and Background Check Employment offers are conditional based, upon the successful completion of a medical examination which includes drug screening and a Department of Justice background check. Physicals are performed by the City's designated physician at the City's expense.
Tuberculosis (TB) Testing
Candidates selected to work in a position requiring contact with children must submit a certificate or notice documenting that within the last two years they have been examined and found to be free of communicable tuberculosis (TB). The certificate or notice must be signed by a licensed examining physician or public health agency.

This is a temporary/seasonal part-time position. No benefits are associated with this posting. However, in accordance with State law, employees are provided sick leave that accrues at one hour for every 30 hours of work, with a maximum accrual of up to 40 hours per year.


Additionally, Part-Time, Seasonal, and Temporary positions are limited to 1000 hours per fiscal year (July 1 to June 30).
