Job Description

Description:

The English Teacher at Eastpointe High School is responsible for helping students develop critical reading, writing, and communication skills while re-engaging them in their educational journey. This role is ideal for an educator who believes in second chances and is passionate about working with students who have not found success in traditional school settings.

Eastpointe operates within a alternative high school model, where flexibility, relationships, and consistency are key. The English Teacher will provide high-quality, standards-aligned instruction while supporting a blended learning environment and contributing to a culture focused on student persistence, credit completion, and graduation.

At Eastpointe, every staff member is a mentor. All teachers are responsible for guiding students through both their academic work and personal development, including consistent use of the student journal.

Key Responsibilities

Instruction & Learning

  • Deliver engaging, standards-aligned English Language Arts instruction (aligned to Arizona state standards)
  • Support students in both direct instruction and blended/online learning environments (e.g., Edgenuity)
  • Teach core ELA components including reading comprehension, writing, grammar, and critical thinking
  • Differentiate instruction to meet diverse learning needs, including students who are credit-deficient or significantly behind grade level
  • Provide targeted writing support and feedback to improve student performance and confidence
  • Facilitate small group instruction, discussion-based learning, and individualized support

Student Engagement & Support

  • Build strong, consistent relationships with students to increase engagement and retention
  • Support students during the first 90 days of enrollment, a critical period for persistence
  • Create a classroom environment that is structured, supportive, and focused on growth
  • Encourage student voice, confidence, and ownership of learning

Mentorship & Student Development

  • Serve as a mentor for a small caseload of students
  • Meet regularly with assigned students to set goals, monitor academic progress, and provide guidance
  • Consistently guide students through the student journal, facilitating reflection, accountability, and life-skill development
  • Ensure student journal completion is meaningful, not transactional, driving real conversations and behavior change
  • Help students develop and stay aligned to an individualized graduation plan
  • Act as a consistent, trusted adult supporting students through challenges and transitions
  • Collaborate with staff to ensure alignment and consistency in how the student journal and mentorship model are implemented

Collaboration & Teamwork

  • Partner with teachers, mentors, registrars, and leadership to support each student’s individualized learning plan and credit recovery pathway
  • Participate in team meetings focused on student progress, interventions, and retention strategies
  • Communicate regularly with staff regarding student performance, attendance, and engagement

Assessment & Accountability

  • Track and document student progress, grades, and course completion
  • Use data to identify gaps and adjust instruction and interventions
  • Maintain accurate records in compliance with school, district, and state requirements

Culture & Mission Alignment

  • Model and reinforce Eastpointe’s commitment to relationships, accountability, and results
  • Embrace and execute the belief that mentorship and personal development are as important as academics
  • Contribute to a culture that is hungry, humble, adaptable, and people-smart
  • Support initiatives that improve student retention, engagement, and graduation outcomes

Qualifications

Required

  • Valid Arizona Teaching Certificate (Secondary English or appropriate certification)
  • Bachelor’s degree in English, Education, or related field
  • Strong classroom management and relationship-building skills
  • Ability to work effectively with at-risk and non-traditional student populations

Preferred

  • Experience in dropout recovery, alternative education, or credit recovery models
  • Experience with blended learning platforms (e.g., Edgenuity)
  • Experience supporting struggling readers and writers
  • Experience in mentoring, coaching, or advisory roles

Key Competencies

  • Relationship-Driven: Connects quickly with students who may be disengaged from school
  • Adaptable: Thrives in a flexible, non-traditional learning environment
  • Results-Oriented: Focused on credit completion, literacy growth, and graduation outcomes
  • Mentor-Minded: Sees mentorship as a core responsibility, not an add-on
  • Strong Communicator: Able to teach, coach, and provide meaningful feedback effectively
  • Collaborative: Works well within a team-based, student-centered model
Requirements:

Compensation details: 40000-55000 Yearly Salary
